Mindful Gratitude

(A Way of Human Flowering #10)

Mindfulness is completely compatible with Christianity – it is a way of experiencing life more fully, and it can lead to more gratitude.

The last spiritual practice was called “Breath of Life”, or Gratitude Breathing (you can read it here). The practice described in this post involved using other sense as a springboard for gratitude to God – so I’ve called it “Mindful Gratitude”.

And it is not complicated.

Wherever you are, make a decision that you are going to pause for a minute or so, and become mindfully aware of your environment: sights, sounds, textures, smells, tastes. This may be extremely hard if you are in a terrible environment at the moment.

If you can, then see if something you are sensing can be a springboard for a prayer of gratitude to God. “Thank you God for the birdsong I can hear”. “Thank you God for the clouds I can see”…

You can practise Mindful Gratitude wherever you like and no one else needs to know about it!

How blessed to be able to pause and give thanks to God.
